I am looking for a symbol library of DeviceNet devices that we can include in our ladder logic diagrams. We are an automotive supplier and need to work in their standard format. Does a symbol library exist? Are these treated like PLC devices? Answered by Gary Peterson, Chairman of SI/OEM User Group, e-mail: A55) We are finishing up a sample drawing package, including symbols and formats for documenting DeviceNet networks. I expect that we will have the first pass ready to post for comments. The documents and symbol library will be posted on the server at my company, C.A.T.S. with a link to the ODVA Web Site. There will also be a comment newsgroup to solicit feedback. Can the DeviceNet Conformance Test Software test Scanners (Masters)? Answered by Ed Polce, Conformance SIG, e-mail A56) The Protocol Conformance Test is applicable to master devices as it verifies the fundamental DeviceNet communications and object model for all devices. The Statement of Conformance for a master device would provide complete information for the device as regards the DeviceNet communications and object model for open objects. The Physical Conformance Test is applicable to master devices as it verifies the fundamental physical layer implementation for all devices. Except for a few required behaviors, the Specification does not address the specifics of master behavior. There is no DeviceNet Profile for a master/scanner device. These devices are typically using the "Communication Adapter" device profile. Details of master behaviors and features are implemented in vendor specific objects. The master specific behavior included in the spec is tested indirectly using the interoperability test. A Device Under Test (DUT) master device is used as the master for the test and must be able to allocate the assigned nodes, communicate I/O data with those nodes and provide the proxy function for the group 2 only slaves it "owns". A master device that can not perform these basic functions fails the test. The master/scanner device developer must be prepared to provide tools needed to allow for complete test of the master behavior. This will become more important when the control program for the interoperability test is more fully utilized to evaluate device/system behavior.
