每个技术都有自身的局限性或者缺点，OPC也不例外。最近发布的OPC UA统一架构，很多人都有它是否能够解决OPC现存问题的疑问。
在OPC UA之前，对于现有OPC的最多抱怨是来自于它的COM原始基础。OPC UA是一种基于服务的跨越平台的解决方案，不再以Microsoft为重要核心。还有些人认为OPC标准的覆盖范围不够广泛，并没有提供必要的安全，配置，统一的地址空间和定义对象映射。
为了将OPC的视角扩展到整个企业，OPC UA规范定义了接口的很多方面，包含复杂的数据模型，统一的信息语义，安全和冗余。那么一个规范怎么根据不同的应用，数据源和案例，强制执行针对上述各项的详细标准呢？实际上这是不可能的。这个规范能够做到的是为上述各项提供基础的通用规定，更为重要的是提供了一种标准的方法拓展信息模型。OPC UA的目标正在与此。OPC UA是一种综合的规范，而不是接口的详细介绍，用户可以得到安全，冗余，名域导航和丰富信息模型的基础支持。但是，不同的供应商可能提供具有不同特性的 OPC UA产品，因此，OPC UA同时提供综合认证，确保实施过程中的互可操作性。
