The VLT 5000 is saving energy
in air-compressors
One of the biggest air-compressor manufacturers in Spain and in South America, BETICO*,
use the Danfoss VLT 5000 frequency converter in the compressors
ER-37, ER-55, ER-75, ER-90, ER-110, ER-132 and ER-160 of the series ER-VF.
Compressors with frequency converter
The VLT 5000 frequency converter controls the
revolutions of the motor in the compressors. The
control range goes from 100% to 20% of nominal
speed, where the compressor is parked if there is
no demand for air over a period of time.
When the demand for compressed air rises, the
compressor is turned on slowly. The frequency
converter accelerates the motor, and big forces on
the compressor and resulting peaks in pressure
are avoided.
The compressors from BETICO use motors totally
standard. To prevent overheating at low speed the
motors are equipped with forced ventilation that
keeps a constant flow of cooling air independent of
the revolutions of the motor.
Why is VLT 5000 saving energy?
In conventional compressors without frequency
converters, the motor always is running at nominal
speed. The adjustments of the flow from the
compressors are done by reducing and in some
cases shutting of the air intake. This method is
seriously reducing the efficiency of the motor that
has to work as an empty pump to overcome the
resistance created by the reduced or closed intake.
In a system with frequency converter the speed of
the motor is adjusted automatically to the lowest
necessary level proportional to the demand. This
solution both ensures a constant pressure in the
system, and saves a considerable amount of
energy.

The figure shows the energy consumption of
different solutions. The control with frequency
converter is the most efficient (Figure made by
BETICO).
Other advantages
The frequency converter has a high power factor
independent of the load of the motor. This reduces
the need for reaction power and eliminates the need
to install a bank of capacitors for compensation.
Furthermore, the frequency converter reduces the
wear of the compressor. It reduces the maintenance
costs and the noise of the compressor.
A very good investment
According to the estimates done by BETICO the
amortization time of the extra initial investment in
a compressor equipped with frequency converter
is less than 2 years.

realized with our VLT 5000 in the lifetime of a
