Three CAN networks in Opel Vectra The new Opel Vectra is equipped with three CAN networks connecting up to 25 units. Due to the different data rate requirements, the CAN networks run on different baud-rates. For high-speed data transfer and for those areas in which short response and transfer times are required, such as in the power-train area (ABS, ESP, and engine management) a 500K bit/s network is used. This not only meets today"s requirements but also allows sufficient freedom for future expansion without the need to replace major parts of the system. The second CAN network running at 95.2K bit/s is reserved for the area of infotainment. Devices such as radio, display screen, navigation system and air conditioning use this network to communicate information to be displayed. Separating infotainment communication functions in a specific sub-network allows shorter innovation cycles and not redesigning other parts of the vehicle"s electronic. The third CAN network is used for comfort functions such as central locking, lighting control, electric windows, etc. The baud-rate is 33.3K bit/s, because the transmitted information is not time-critical. The Opel Vectra"s electronic control units (ECU) linked to the three CAN networks connects up to 30 sensor systems. In order to reduce power consumption, all ECUs support power-saving mode. In the User Mode the car can be parked up to 40 days and it still can be started.
