‘Django’ Re-Chained in China

Like a town marshal determined to nip trouble in the bud, China’s main film distributor rode into the country’s movie theaters on Thursday and took out Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” before it could get its gun out of its holster.

“Django,” the story of an American slave-turned-bounty hunter who cuts a bloody swath through the antebellum South in an attempt to free his wife, was set to premiere in China Thursday morning. But it was pulled at the last minute after China Film Group, the film’s government-controlled importer, issued a notice instructing theaters to stop showing it.
《被解放的迪亚戈》讲述一个曾经是奴隶的赏金猎人为了解救妻子而在南北战争前的南方大开杀戒的故事，原定于周四上午在中国上映。但是在它即将上映前的最后时刻，这部电影的进口商、国有的中影集团(China Film Group)发布了一则通知，要求影院停止放映这部电影。

“The notice we got this morning said it was for ‘technical reasons,’” a Beijing-based employee of the UME Cineplex theater chain told China Real Time. “This applies to theaters nationwide, and we haven’t been told whether theaters will be able to show the film in the future.”

The movie had already begun showing in some places when the orders arrived. One Chinese fan of Mr. Tarantino’s, 27-year-old photographer Xue Yutao, said he had just sat down to watch a 10:15 a.m. showing of “Django” when the lights suddenly came on.

“About a minute after the film started, several people in suits came in and the film stopped,” he said, adding that the theater apologized and offered them refunds. “At first we were shocked and didn’t know what to do, but then we all laughed at how ridiculous it was.”

Thursday was supposed to mark the first ever showing of a Tarantino film in Chinese theaters. The fact that the politically controversial “Django” had been approved for official distribution in China’s tightly controlled film market was seen by some as a sign that the country’s regulators could be taking a more open approach to foreign films.
周四本来是塔伦蒂诺的电影首次在中国放映的第一天。一些人认为，政治上引发争议的《被解放的迪亚戈》在中国受到严格控制的电影市场被批准正式发行是一个信号，意味着中国的监管机构可能正在对外国电影采取更开放的态度。

It wasn’t immediately clear Thursday afternoon what “technical” problems led to “Django” being pulled, though some were speculating online that it may have had to do with a brief bit of nudity toward the end of the film.

China Film Group and the State Administration of Press, Publications, Radio, Film and Television, which regulates the Chinese film industry, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Responding by email, a Los-Angeles spokesman for Sony Pictures, the film’s international distributor, said, “We regret that ‘Django Unchained’ has been removed from theaters and are working with the Chinese authorities to determine whether the film can be rescheduled.”

Beijing-based film critic Lie Wen, who saw an advanced screening of “Django” on Tuesday night, said censors had left the film largely untouched except for a few of the bloodier shots in the film’s violent conclusion. “If you hadn’t seen the original, you wouldn’t even realize it had been censored,” he said, calling the decision to pull it “very unreasonable, very conservative and very foolish.”
