How to download PROFINET board firmware

1. About this document
This document is a supplement of PROFINET I/O OPERATOR’S MANUAL.
This document (version 1.0) explains how to download the firmware to Siemens
CP1604/CP1616 PROFINET hardware.
2. Requirement for download function
If the controller is R-30iA, the software version must be V7.70P22 or later for R-30iA.
If the controller is R-30iB, download function is supported.
3. Firmware download from Download screen at CTRL START
1. Copy the firmware file (*.fwl) to a memory card, or other devices.
2. If the robot controller power is on, turn off the controller.
3. With the PREV key and the NEXT key held down on teach pendant, turn on the controller.
Configuration menu is displayed.

8. Select 1. PROFINET.
9. PROFINET Download screen appears. The firmware file can be downloaded to PROFINET
board (CP1604/CP1616) by the oepration in this screen (procedure 3-1).

10. Insert the memory card, or other device where the firmware file is copied.
Procedure 3-1 : Download of firmware
To download firmware, please follow the procedure below.
1. Check the firmware file name with device path (e.g. MC:) displayed in the screen.
If the file name is not equal to the firmware file to be download, change the file name.
The file name must be specified with device path.
2. Move cursor to “Download firmware”, and press Enter.
3. Dialogue with a message like “This operation may take 7 minutes” shows up.
Answer “Yes” to proceed.
4. Wait for the completion of download. Never turn off the robot controller during the download,
otherwise firmware in PROFINET board might be erased, and PROFINET board is no longer
operational until firmware is not recovered (Please see Procedure 3-2).
5. The result of download shows up in the screen when download has finished or failed.
6. Cold start the robot controlle (Press FCTN key. Select 1. Cold Start).
NOTE: Please power off/on the controller after firmware update is completed. If the external
power supply of CP1604/CP1616 is connected, remove it before cycle power and connect it
again after power up.
Procedure 3-2 : Recovery in case the firmware of PROFINET board is erased.
In case of the failure of firmware download by a corrupted firmware file, or the robot controller is
turned off during firmware download, the firmware of PROFINET board might be erased. Then
the PROFINET board is no longer operational until the firmware is recovered.
To recover the firmware, prepare the firmware that can be downloaded successfully, and follow
the procedure below. The firmware download can be tried again after firmware recovery.
1. Set $PNIO_DL.$NO_FIRM_ST to 1. Please note that the system variable will return to 0 at
next start up of the robot controller.
2. Perform “Controlled Start” of the robot controller.
3. Open the setup PROFINET download screen, and follow the procedure 3-1 to download the
firmware. Please note that PROFINET board is not operational until firmware is downloaded.
